Enjoying Provence's weather... cigales, pastis and pétanque are the french words of the day ;)

Reversing the flow

The internet is broken! The information is not flowing. Actually, when you want to receive an information, you have to go grab it. Wanna know when I publish something new on l’Ouvre-Boite? Best case : you have to start your RSS reader, worst case, you have to check here. Wanna know your bank account balance? You have to login to your online banking… The information is almost never coming to you! Why is this bad?

  1. Often, when you check for new information : there’s nothing new : you lost your time and consumed resources for nothing. You don’t think that’s that bad? On July 21st (one day), friendfeed checked flickr 2,9 million times to get new uploaded pictures… and actually detected only 6,721! In other words : Friendfeed checks 500 times flickr to get a new picture, eventually! (wanna learn more, check this excellent presentation by Kellan.
  2. Sometimes, when you check for new information, there is just too much for you to read/process anything. Try to stop reading your emails for a week and let’s see how you feel next time you check them!
  3. Even worse, if you don’t go check for the information, you will never know it actually happened! FOWA is a great conference that I wanted to attend. When I visited the website last sunday, I decided that I would buy tickets, but there was no way for me “subscribe” to the website so that I would know when they start selling tickets. I decide I would come back at a later date. Ryan Carson, the organizer released a limited number of early bird tickets for $100 on monday (instead of $700). Of course, I didn’t know because I just had no way to know!
Notifixious solves all these problems, because it reverses the “flow” of the web : I don’t have to check for information, but, once I said that I am interested in a website, I will receive updates from the website. It’s that simple.
