Hiring Strategy for a start-up (Episode 1)
It’s no secret for anyone, but hiring is probably one of the most challenging topics for a start-up, specifically hiring the very first employees. This is clearly my #1 focus today! And I’ll show you what I’ll do! But prior to this, let me explain first why it’s difficult.
- Talent black holes : Google, Apple, and even some very sexy start-ups are less than 50 miles away : what do you expect? Notifixious stock options are worth more than Yahoo’s, but less than Facebook’s
- We need “start-upers” : not everybody can/will/want to work for a start-up : it’s a lot of painful work, at no time and with no “instant-reward”! Also, there is clearly not all the “comfort” of a “coporate” job, with an assistant, an IT department, or even “unlimited” resources! And, even though San Francisco has more of these profiles, there is also more start-ups than in any other place on earth!
- I’m nobody : most of the time, the founding team is a team of long-time friends or colleagues. People know each other, and the value of their start-up mates because they’ve been working together, because they know someone who worked with them or even because they already succeeded in some previous ventures! I’m a “young” french dude and I have never worked for any startup here or even graduated from Stanford or Berkeley… it’s not very easy to be introduced all around!
Anyway, I’m starting these days an aggressive strategy to mitigate all this : stay tuned
